Iran, UN Discuss latest developments in Iraq

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) UN Secretary-General`s Special Representative for Iraq Nikolay Mladenov and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif discussed the latest developments in the crisis-hit country, and stressed the need for international consensus to root out terrorism.

A statement by the Iranian Foreign Ministry received by IraqiNews.com cited “In the meeting in New York on Saturday, Zarif said enhancement of stability and security in Iraq stood atop the agenda of his recent visit to Iraq.”

“He went on to say that Iran was seriously defending Iraqi government and people in confrontation with threats of the ISIL terrorist group. Zarif underlined the vital importance of boosting regional cooperation and consultations to eliminate extremism and terrorism in the Middle-East,” the statement added.

“Mladenov, for his part, pointed to complicated situation in Iraq, and underlined that any foreign interference in Iraq can make the current situation worse. He said UN is ready to play an effective role to pave the ground for broadening regional cooperation to overcome the current crisis,” the statement concluded. /End/
