Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The UN Secretary General’s Special Representative to Iraq, Martin Kobler, called upon the political blocs in the parliament to reach an agreement on the selection of the Board of Commissioners of the Independent High Electoral Commission and find a solution to serve the legitimate democratic aspirations of the Iraqi people.

He said in a press statement received by Iraqi News (IraqiNews.com) “The Independent High Electoral Commission is the most important guarantee for holding free and fair elections in Iraq and its presence is essential to ensure the protection and sustainability of the democratic process in Iraq.”

Kobler added that “The upcoming elections in Iraq scheduled to take place early in 2013 and 2014 cannot be held as scheduled unless the new Board of Commissioners is nominated without further delay.”

He called “The political parties to make the integrity, competence and independence the basic criteria for the selection of the Board of Commissioners and in accordance with Iraqi law.”

The political blocs decided to increase the number of Board of commissioners into 15 members instead of nine.
