Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) MP Qasim al-Araji of the Parliamentary Security & Defense Committee, described the fears of the Kurdistan Region over the movements of the Iraqi federal army in the disputed areas as “unjustified”.

Araji stated to IraqiNews.com “The concerns of the Kurdistan Region towards the Iraqi Army’s movements are unjustified since this army was formed by the same leaders who are ruling the country now,” stressing that “Antagonizing the Iraqi Army does not serve interests of any side and the Kurdish people is an essential part of the Iraqi population therefore we will never allow to use this army against any social component whether on sectarian, national or ethnic bases.”

“The formation of Dijla Operations Command is a legal and constitutional right where the Article no 110 of the Constitution gives the Premier an exclusive right to establish military forces to run the security file,” he added.

The last few days witnessed an escalation in the tensions between Baghdad and Erbil on the background of the recent events that took place in Tuz Khormato district of Salah il-Din province on last Friday when elements from Dijla Operations Command clashed with bodyguards of a Kurdish figure in Tikrit city, capital of Salah il-Din resulted in killing a civilian and injuring a number of Dijla OC’s elements.

It is worth to mention that Nijafi has launched an initiative to bring the different views closer between the two sides so as to address the crisis and protect the country from the scourge of civil war where he met with the President of Kurdistan Region, Masoud Barzani, and the PM Maliki for this purpose.
