Nijaifi, Kobler discuss political scene in Kirkuk

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, Osama al-Nijaifi, discussed with the UN Special Representative for Iraq, Martin Kobler, a number of files most notably the local elections of Kirkuk province, the political crisis between the Federal Government and Kurdistan Region and the Israeli assaults on Gaza Strip.

A statement by Nijaifi’s office cited that “Kobler reviewed during the meeting which was held at Nijaifi’s office the details of his recent visit to Kirkuk and the outcomes of his talks with representatives of the social components in the province.”

“Kobler stressed need to form a commission headed by Nijaifi and membership of the social components of Kirkuk with participation of the UN in order to bring the different views among the those components closer and facilitate the launch of the local elections there,” it added.

For his part, Nijaifi confirmed that “Non-launching the provincial elections in Kirkuk would make things worse and in case of any unrest in the province this will negatively affect the overall situation on the national and regional levels.”

“Both sides discussed the ramifications of the recent crisis between the federal government and Kurdistan Region where Nijaifi stressed on avoiding mobilizing the military forces especially the country prepares to launch local elections, hoping to find new approach in running the political process to address its defects,” the statement pointed out.

“Concerning the Israeli attacks against Gaza Strip, Nijaifi handed over Kobler a message in which he expressed concerns towards what is going on in Gaza and the genocide committed by the Israeli warplanes against the armless people in a way that violates all the international laws,” it concluded.
