Nijaifi stresses UN’s role in supporting next Iraqi elections

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament Osama al-Nijaifi stressed the important role of the United Nations in supporting the coming elections in Iraq and developing the legislations and parliamentary committees according to the Iraqi constitution.

A statement by Nijaifi’s office received by IraqiNews.com cited Sunday “Nijaifi met at his office the delegation of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) headed by Helen Clark and both discussed the role of the UN in the democratic change witnessed by Iraq and importance of concluding an agreement of mutual understanding to develop the parliamentary performance and support the Independent Human Rights Commission in Iraq and enhance the participation of women in public life.”

According to the statement, Nijaifi mentioned that “The Parliament succeeded during the last two years to endorse 145 law drafts but the political disputes hurdle endorsing further important law drafts which we seek to endorse them in the upcoming phase.”

“At the end of the meeting, the visiting delegation expressed their happiness for concluding the mutual understanding memorandum between the Iraqi Parliament and the UNAMI which will enhance the future cooperation between both sides,” the statement concluded.
