United Nations condemns persecution of Christians in Iraq

(IraqiNews.com) On Tuesday The UN Security Council condemned oppression practiced by the organization of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant against minorities in Iraq, especially the Christians of Mosul, and warned that such actions could constitute a “crime against humanity”, urging the government and the United Nations to intensify efforts to counter terrorist threats.

The Security Council issued a unanimous declaration of the 15 countries on Monday evening for a “strong condemnation of the systematic persecution practiced by the organization of the Islamic state and its affiliated groups against individuals belonging to minorities and people reject the extremist ideology of this organization.”

The Security Council added that “widespread and systematic attacks against the civilian population because of their ethnic, religious or faith can constitute a crime against humanity; its perpetrators will be held accountable.”

The Council commended “the efforts made by the Iraqi government and the United Nations to address terrorist threats against minorities and to meet the urgent humanitarian needs of people displaced by the conflict in Iraq,” calling to “intensifying these efforts.”
