First Iraqi woman given honorary title of Clan Elder

Sheikh’a Omaya Naji al-Jabbara, a woman’s rights activist, attorney, anti-ISIS combatant and mother of 4 was killed by an ISIS sniper on June 22.

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Iraqi Tribal Affairs’ office on Wednesday announced that the martyr, Oumaya Naji al-Jabbara, will be the first Iraqi woman to be given the honorary title of Clan Elder.

The head of the Tribal Affairs’ office stated today that, the martyr, Sheikh’a Oumaya al-Jabbara had set a heroic example in defiance of terrorism, pointing out she will be the first Iraqi woman to ever be given the honorary title of Clan Elder in appreciation of her role in fighting against ISIS after her death in the al-Alam neighborhood of Northern Tikrit.

Al-Jabbara was killed by ISIS fighters on June 22nd when she was spotted by an ISIS sniper who shot her directly in the chest. Oumaya has 4 children (Omar, al-Farouq, al-Yamama, al-Mas). And Her brother Sheikh Khamis took her home shortly after her death. He then prayed and thanked God for the glorious death his sister had in battle.

The Iraqi martyr Oumaya Naji al-Jabbara was born in 1974 and lived in al-Alam neighborhood of Northern Tikrit. She graduated from Tikrit University with a law degree in 2011, then she represented her province in the International Visitor Program (IVLP) in the United States in 2011.

After proving her skills and cleverness, she worked as the counselor of Women’s Affairs and Social Care for the Governor of Salahuddin province. Oumaya started working in the human rights field in 2005 when she helped establish the Organization of Iraqi and Arab Women and hosted a number of local and international conferences about human rights, domestic violence, violence on children, and help for refugees from Iraq and across the world.
