Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) France’s President Francois Hollande arrived in Baghdad in a visit which the presidency said is meant to reiterate support for the Iraqi government’s war on Islamic State militants and to check on French troops engaged in the US-led coalition fight against the group.

He is scheduled to meet with Iraqi President Fuad Masum and Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.

The visit ends this afternoon, after which Hollande heads to Erbil for a meeting with the president of Kurdistan region, Masud Barzani.

This is Hollande’s second visit to Iraq, and his first was in September 2014.

France is a member of the Global Coalition to Counter ISIS, led by the United States, which backs the Iraqi government forces in its campaign against IS militants who took over large areas of Iraq in 2014.
