ISIS smuggles Iraqi wheat to its headquarters in northern Syria

(IraqiNews.com) Iraqi Minister of Agriculture, Falah Zaidan claimed he has reports state that the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) smuggles hundreds of tons of wheat and barley from Nineveh (northern Iraq) to the cities of Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor, the most important strongholds of the organization in the east of northern Syria.

Zidane said in a report published by the official website of the Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture: “The ISIS organization considers Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor in Syria as safe havens, thus transfers wheat and barley from Mosul to these regions to preserve them, particularly after the the security forces’ progress toward Mosul.”

He added, “Iraq was expected to achieve self-sufficiency in the production of strategic crops this season, but the ISIS gangs seizing important agricultural areas and confiscating a lot of strategic crops kept us from achieving our goal.”
