Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Poverty rates at the whole of Iraq have stood at 30%, making more than 41% at terrorism-hit areas, according to Planning Minister Salman al-Jamili.

“Islamic State occupation of some Iraqi regions has formed an impediment to economic activity by obstructing international travel and foreign trade routes besides the destruction of production infrastructure, therefore weakening Iraq’s competitiveness,” a statement by the ministry said, quoting the minister during a high-level development conference in Nairobi.”

The minister attributed the greater extent of poverty at terrorism-affected areas to the migration of more than 3.8 million people from those areas, having lost their property and means of living.

The issue of displacement and internal migration, especially among youth aged 15-29, represents a “demographic and developmental challenge” to Iraq as it “diminishes the population’s share in the labor force.”
