Iraqi forces recaptured the town of Hamadaniya, in Nineveh Plain, from Islamic State extremists as part of operations launched to liberate the province in October.

NPU media spokesperson Jameel al-Jameel said the troops launched a campaign to erect Christmass trees across the town. “A seven-meter-high Christmas tree and a ten-meter-high cross were set up in the center of the town,” Jameel said, with the aim of restoring “joy” and “life” to Hamadaniya.

Religious congregations are also planned at the town during new year celebrations, he said.
