Baghdad – (iraqiNews.com) Five people were killed and 15 others were wounded when two IED explosions rocked market areas in central and south Baghdad.

A bomb exploded near a popular restaurant in Sheikh Omar neighborhood, Almasalah reported, quoting a government source, adding that three people were killed and six others were wounded.

Another bomb exploded near a popular marketplace at Youssefiya, south of Baghdad, killing 2 and wounding 9, the website reported.

Baghdad has recently witnessed a surge in deadly bombings, with observers commenting that the attacks were possibly carried out by Islamic State militants to divert security authorities attention from Mosul, where the extremist group has witnessed a month of consecutive defeats to Iraqi forces and popular militias struggling to liberate the city.

The United Nations has recently said that 58000 people were killed across Iraq since ISIS occupied wide parts of the country.
