Diyala (IraqiNews.com) A farmer was seriously injured as an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in a village northeast of Diyala governorate on Wednesday, according to Alsumaria News.

A local source told Alsumaria that an IED planted on the side of a road in Tawakkul village, Diyala, exploded today, leaving a farmer with serious injuries.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source added that security forces opened an inquiry into the incident.

Some areas in Diyala have seen a surge over the past months in bombings and armed attacks against security members, paramilitary groups and civilians.

On Sunday, a civilian was reportedly wounded in a similar IED explosion in northeast of Diyala,

Islamic State militants had launched attacks against security troops, the pro-government forces and civilians over the past few months in northeast of the province

Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State Sunni extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

More than 700 Iraqis were killed and wounded during June as result of violence and armed conflicts, according to a monthly count by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), which excludes security members’ deaths. Baghdad ranked the second place with 22 deaths and 88 injuries.
