Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Human Rights Watch condemned on Tuesday Islamic State militants’ execution of 13 people in an Iraqi village after a local uprising to drive the group out in October.

“The executions, which are war crimes, took place in the neighboring villages of al-Hud and al-Lazzagah, 50 kilometers south of Mosul, following local attempts to expel ISIS fighters who controlled the villages,” said the report by the organization, urging Iraqi security authorities to investigate war crimes committed during its battles with IS, and to ensure fair prosecution of perpetrators.

“ISIS responded to the village uprising by unlawfully executing people captured in the uprising and civilians who weren’t involved,” said Lama Fakih, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch.

On the first day of security operations to retake Mosul on October 17th, 45 villagers from both villages attacked IS militants as security forces approached, killing 19 of them, HRW recounted, quoting seven residents.

News about IS executions of civilians since 2014, and the later discovery of mass graves after the group’s retreat, have been common and recurring since the launch of operations to recapture Mosul.

While Iraqi security forces say they retook almost a third of the city’s eastern section, and voice optimism of a total victory within a few weeks, commanders from the US-led coalition fighting IS in Iraq say the battle could last for at least two more years.
