Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) The agriculture official at the self-proclaimed Islamic State (ISIS) was killed in the airstrikes that targeted a group gathering in central Kirkuk late Monday, a security source has said.

“The (US-led) international coalition carried out a strike today targeting ISIS’s ‘agriculture diwan’ in central Hawija (55 km southwest of Kirkuk), killing its official, nicknamed Abul Baraa al-Muhajer, and eight other members,” the source told Alsumaria News on Monday.

Islamic State militants announced in 2014 the establishment of an Islamic “Caliphate” after occupying large swathes of Iraq and Syria. The group appointed ministers for various government portfolios, but many have been reportedly killed over the past weeks as Iraqi troops, backed by a US-led international coalition and tribal troops, launched major campaigns to retake several Iraqi towns from the extremist group.
