Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) An officer in Nineveh Police announced on Friday, that 18 civilians were either killed or wounded in a shelling conducted by the Islamic State group, in central Mosul.

Captain Amir Wathiq said in a press statement that the self-proclaimed Islamic State group shelled the neighborhoods of al-Mushahda, Nabi Sheth and Bab Laksh using mortar missiles.

The shelling resulted in the killing of twelve civilians and the injury of six others, Wathiq added.

Furthermore, Wathiq explained that security forces arrived in the area of incident, while ambulances transferred the wounded to nearby hospitals and medical centers and the bodies to the forensic medicine department.

Noteworthy, the Islamic State also shelled the areas of al-Jawsak and al-Dindan, south of Mosul on Wednesday, killing seven civilians and wounding 13 others.

Nineveh Province is witnessing extensive military operations, after Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced launching an offensive to liberate the western side of the city of Mosul, in addition to capturing the last stronghold of the Islamic State in the city.
