(IraqiNews.com) Baghdad – ISIS militants have killed an archaeologist in ancient city of Palmyra in Syria, which it has controlled since more than a month.

Maumoon Abdul Karim, Director General of the Syrian effects, said according to Reuters that ISIS gunmen slaughtered the archaeologist Khaled al-Assaad and hung his body in a public square in Palmyra.

Abdel Karim said that al-Assaad, 82 years old, accomplished several scientific studies about Palmyra, which was a commercial station for caravans, published in a number of international archaeological journals.

Al-Assaad also worked in the past few decades with the US, French and German missions in the city, which is dating back to two thousand years and it is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site.
