UN selects Ibrahimi as Special Representative in Syria

(IraqiNews.com) The United Nations announced on Friday that the Algerian diplomat, Al-Akhdar al-Ibrahimi, will replace Kofi Annan the former UN Special Representative in Syria as an international mediator in Syria.

The name of Ibrahimi’s position will be the UN Special Mutual Representative in Syria to replace Anan who will step aside by end of current month.

Diplomats said that “The reason behind the change of the name of the position came under Ibrahimi’s desire.”

The UN Spokesperson, Eduardo del Beye, assured that “The UN Secretary General expressed his appreciation to Ibrahimi’s desire in putting his skills and expertise in this decisive post which requires strong and unified support by the international community including the Security Council.”

Beye said “The UN Secretary General, Annan and the Secretary General of the Arab League Nabil al-Arabi support Ibrahimi’s appointment,” noting that “Reaching peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis is the UN most important priorities.”

The diplomats confirmed that all the members of Security Council support Ibrahimi.

Officials in the UN announced “Ibrahimi is expected to arrive to New York next week to meet Annan to discuss adopting new approach in dealing with the crisis in Syria.”
