IHEC urges Iraqi Parliament to accelerate amending local elections law

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Independent High Electoral Commission called the Iraqi Parliament to speed up the endorsement of amending the provincial elections law No. 36 of 2008 because its delay might hinder conducting the local elections in its specified date.

The head of the Commission, Sarbast Mustafa told IraqiNews.com “The most prominent challenges that face the IHEC’s performance is the lack of ratifying the fourth amendment on the local elections law,” stressing “This necessitates accelerating its endorsement by the Parliament since delaying it would hurdle the launch of the next provincial elections in its identified date.”

“Mustafa denied existence of political pressures practiced on the Commission,” he added.

Earlier, the Parliament has postponed ratifying the proposal of amending the provincial elections law No. 36 of 2008 that concerns the distribution of the vacant seats.
