UNAMI calls political sides to speed up Parliament Speaker nominations

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Nickolay Mladenov, called the political sides to speed up reaching an agreement over nominating Speaker and his Deputies.

A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received by Iraqi News cited “over the past few days, Mladenov held discussions with a number of Iraqi political leaders and encouraged everyone to stay within the framework of constitutional political process so as the parliament meet immediately.

“Mladenov received assurances about the desire of political leaders to reach an agreement and to find solutions to the current crisis in the constitutional framework,” the statement added.

“Mladenov outlined that the blocs in the parliament must set the days of the final negotiations, and work within the timetables constitutionally for the necessary nominations, through the first step which is to elect the speaker of the parliament, which must happen without unnecessary delay,” the statement concluded.
