Watchdog urges interior minister to investigate assault on journalist

BAGHDAD, IraqiNews.com: The Iraqi Association for Defending Rights of Journalist in Iraq called on the Interior Minister to start investigating federal policemen’s assault on the correspondent of Al-Itijah (direction) Channel in Jadiriyah area on May 23. “These assaults on journalists in Iraq go uninvestigated by the ministry, a matter which contributed to an increase in these assaults against the journalists all over Iraq, even though these correspondents or photographers are getting official approvals issued by security departments allowing them to work freely without any intervention,” read the statement as received by IraqiNews.com news agency. The association expressed its concern towards the continuous attacks targeting journalists in Iraq without any intervention on the part of the Iraqi government and the interior ministry to stop these assaults. “This assault was not the first one, as there were many Iraqi journalists or even press technicians who had been targeted by either the Iraqi police forces or even bodyguards of some of Iraqi officials,” it added.
