Iraq recovers a billion dollar from its frozen funds

(IraqiNews.com) London-based newspaper ‘Life’ revealed on Friday, that Iraq has recovered a billion dollar from its frozen funds in a number of countries, pointing out that ministers of the former government smuggled billions of dollars abroad.

The newspaper said in a report issued today, followed by IraqiNew.com, “The Finance Committee in the Iraqi Parliament announced that a billion dollar has been recovered from frozen funds in a number of countries,” indicating that, “The government is working on recovering the rest of the funds.”

The newspaper added, “The Commission also confirmed that the Parliament’s second legislative term will reopen the file of smuggled and frozen funds, and mechanisms of recovering it in coordination with the concerned authorities.”

The newspaper said that a source in the Parliamentary Integrity Committee stated, that the Commission has a lot of evidence and documents that confirm the involvement of political figures in the former government (government of Nuri al-Maliki) in smuggling billions of dollars abroad. Those documents will be reviewed by the competent authorities.
