Iraqi president meets former premier on cabinet formation, regional crises

Iraqi President Barham Salih meets former prime minister and Head of the Victory Alliance Haider al-Abadi in Baghdad.

Baghdad ( – Iraqi President Barham Salih has stressed the importance of abiding by the constitution to solve pending issues among national parties and powers.

The president made the remarks Monday during a meeting at As Salam palace in Baghdad with former prime minister and Head of the Victory Alliance Haider al-Abadi, Alghad Press website quoted the Iraqi presidency as saying in a statement.

The two sides discussed the latest developments in Iraqi and reiterated the need to reinforce the government’s bids to restore the country’s security and provide better services for citizens.

The meeting also tackled the formation of the new cabinet under prime minister Adil Abdul Mahdi.

“The current situation in Iraq and the region requires more efforts to find radical solutions for the existing crises through common visions,” the president said.

Abadi, meanwhile, appreciated efforts exerted by Salih to keep Iraqi parties united and to promote the culture of dialogue among them.

Last October, the parliament approved 14 ministers of Adel Abdul Mahdi’s government, allowing him to become prime minister.

Lawmakers were planned to vote on the remaining ministers in November but the vote was delayed due to political disagreements over nominees.
