Iraqi president urges unifying int’l efforts to eradicate terrorism

Baghdad ( – Iraqi President Barham Saleh stressed on Monday the need for unifying international efforts to eradicate the scourge of terrorism in the world.

The president made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation of the European Union (EU) Foreign Affairs Committee under David McAllister, Iraqi website Alghad Press quoted Saleh’s media office as saying in a statement.

During the meeting, Saleh stressed the importance of the support provided by the international community, particularly the European Union, to support Iraq in the fight against terrorism, as well as completing the reconstruction process and helping the displaced people to return to their homes.

He also called for “unifying regional and international efforts to fight extremist groups and establish peace and security in the region.”

“Iraq is looking forward to building good and solid relations with the European Union based on openness, dialogue and constructive cooperation in order to achieve common interests,” he said, praising the European Union’s stances in support of Iraq, especially in its war against terrorism.

The members of the European delegation, meanwhile, reiterated their support for Iraq in the “security, political, urban and humanitarian fields,” stressing “the keenness of their countries to develop cooperation and joint action with Iraq.”
