Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The situation in Syria is still worrying for Iraq, is prime minister said on Tuesday as his troops have begun targeting Islamic State extremists’ locations there.

Iraqi premier Haider al-Abadi, speaking during his weekly press briefing in Baghdad, said “the situation in Syria, and its war against Daesh (Islamic State) is still arousing concern for Iraq”.

Iraq declared victory over Islamic State extremists in December, announcing the recapture of all territories which the group occupied in 2014 to proclaim a “caliphate” rule in Iraq and neighboring Syria.

U.S.-backed Syrian Kurdish troops, and Russian-backed Syrian government forces have recaptured the extremists’ main bases in Syria, and remnant militant groups there have been evacuated from their latest bastions as part of agreements with Syrian forces sponsored by Russia.
