Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Iraqis stranded at U.S. airports following a refugee and migrants entry ban by President Donald Trump had been given entry, U.S. ambassador to Baghdad Douglas A. Silliman has said.

Meeting with Iraqi Vice President Nouri al-Maliki on Tuesday, Silliman said the executive order, signed by Trump on January 27th, involves many “exceptions” that will allow domestic security agencies to grant travellers entry to the United States. He added that a number of Iraqis held at American airports were already allowed in following the order.

The order temporarily suspends visas and bans entry for migrants from seven predominantly Muslim countries – Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen as part of efforts to combat terrorism.

But the measure drew international condemnation both on the political and popular levels, and caused hundreds to be stranded at world airports.

Iraq has asked the U.S. Administration to reconsider the proceeding, with some inside the Iraqi parliament calling for a similar ban in return on U.S. visitors.

Late Tuesday, the U.S. Department of State renewed an Iraq travel warning for American citizens. “Travel within Iraq remains very dangerous, and the ability of the Embassy to assist U.S. citizens facing difficulty is extremely limited,” the department said. “U.S. citizens in Iraq are at high risk for kidnapping and terrorist violence. “
