Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Twenty-three Islamic State members were arrested in a security operation carried out in west of Mosul, a source from Nineveh police said on Wednesday.

Speaking to BasNews, Cap. Jassim Maarouf, of Nineveh Police Command, said “security forces carried out a wide-scale operation, after receiving information over infiltration of Islamic State members into al-Zanjili and Souq al-Maash region.”

Security forces, according to Maarouf, “besieged the region and carried out a campaign that resulted in arresting 23 militants possessing weapons and lists with names of policeman to kill them.”

The militants “were taken to the command headquarters for investigations ahead of standing trial,” Maarouf said.

Earlier today, spokesman for the Interior Ministry Maj. Gen. Saad Maan told Alghad Press that four militants were arrested in al-Zahraa and al-Qahira districts in Mosul’s eastern side.

On Saturday, fourteen members of Islamic State cells were arrested as a wide-scale security operation was carried out, south of Mosul.

twenty-three Islamic State members, including leaders, were arrested, earlier this month, northwest of Mosul, as security forces carried out an operation in Badush village to follow the militants.

Thousands of Islamic State militants as well as Iraqi civilians were killed since the government campaign, backed by paramilitary troops and the coalition was launched in October 2016.

In December, the Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi announced gaining control on all the territories that were captured by Islamic State, since 2014. However, the group still has dormant cells, through which it carries out attacks, across Iraq like it used to do before 2014.
