Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Baghdad court has sentenced four Islamic State members to death over planting explosives to target security troops, south of Baghdad.

In a statement on Tuesday, Abdul-Sattar al-Bayraqdar, a spokesperson of the High Judicial Council, said “Karkh Criminal Court sentenced four terrorists, who admitted affiliation to Islamic State and the so-called the South State, to death.”

The four terrorists, according to the statement, “used to plant bombs on roads, through which army troops pass in al-Yusufiya region, then explode them. Their crimes resulted in killing and injuring many security personnel.”

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory over the militant group, previously in December, however, observers warn that the group still poses a security threat with sleeper cells.

Many IS members were detained during liberation battles that freed cities, which were recaptured by the militant group in 2014. Thousands of militants as well as Iraqi civilians were killed since the government campaign, backed by paramilitary troops and the coalition was launched in October 2016 to fight the militant group, which declared a self-styled “caliphate” from Mosul in June 2014.

A report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) said 94 Iraqis were killed, while 163 others were wounded due to Violence and armed conflicts during the month of May.
