(IraqiNews.com) Baghdad- Iraqi security sources revealed the death of 45 soldiers and the injury of 33 others in an initial toll of the explosion of a tank bomb, driven by a suicide bomber, targeted a warehouse for ammunition in Tharthar district west of Samarra.

The sources said that the dead and wounded have arrived in Samarra General Hospital in Salah al-Din province.

The security official said, “The suicide bomber was driving a tank and broke into a repository of weapon in Tharthar area, west of Samarra.”

He added that weapons and missiles began to explode inside the warehouse, which resulted in dozens of casualties, indicating that the suicide bombing was very severe, followed by a series of explosions at the ammunition depot.

The source pointed out that the wounded were in serious condition and the death toll is expected to increase; a number of the dead and wounded were taken to a field hospital south of Samarra.

Samarra is located approximately 120 km north of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, and includes one of the main Shiite religious shrines; it has been attacked several times by ISIS since last summer.
