Iraqi security forces evacuate an injured soldier during heavy fighting against Islamic State group militants in Fallujah, Iraq, Wednesday, June 15, 2016. Fallujah has been locked in a cycle of conflict since 2003, when it emerged as a bastion of the insurgency against the Americans. Militant attacks and bombings were followed by sweeping arrest raids, which further stoked local grievances. Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Six security personnel from the Iraqi army were killed and injured in an attack carried out by the militant group on borders between Diyala, Salahuddin provinces, a security source said on Wednesday.

“Islamic State carried out an attack against joint checkpoints in Mutaibija region, between Diyala and Salahuddin, leaving four personnel killed and two others injured.”

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source said, “the situation is under control at the meantime.”

On Monday, a source said prominent Islamic State member was killed in an airstrike in Mutaibija.

Earlier this week, three IS militants were reportedly killed before fleeing towards desert areas in Mutaibija.

Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks across Iraq against troops. Security reports indicate that the militant group still poses threat against stability in the country. The group still has dormant cells, through which it carries out attacks, across Iraq like it used to do before 2014.

A total of 79 Iraqi civilians were killed and another 99 injured in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in Iraq in July 2018, according to casualty figures recorded by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

Baghdad was the worst affected Governorate, with 63 civilian casualties (30 killed, 33 injured), followed by Kirkuk (8 killed, 34 injured) and Nineveh (13 killed and 05 injured).
