Diyala (IraqiNews.com) – An Iraqi farmer was killed Sunday when an explosive charge targeted his vehicle on an agricultural road in Diyala province, a security source said.

Speaking to privately-owned TV channel Alsumaria News, the source said that an explosive charge placed on the side of an agricultural road went off Sunday morning in al-Abbara district, northeast of Diyala, leaving a farmer dead.

A security force cordoned off the blast site and carried the body to the forensic medicine department, the source added.

Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

The surge in violence between armed groups and government forces has resulted in over five million internally displaced persons across Iraq and left more than 11 million in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
