Bombs dismantled, policeman arrested on bribery charges in Baghdad

Baghdad (Iraqinews.com) – Iraqi troops have defused several bombs while a policeman was arrested for receiving a bribe from a detainee in Baghdad Tuesday.
In a statement, a copy of which was obtained by Alghad Press, the Baghdad Operations Command said, “The troops have found a rocket and dismantled several bombs and a booby-trapped house at Tel Tasah and al-Shortan areas north of the Iraqi capital.”
No casualties were reported, the statement read.
Meanwhile, an Iraqi policeman was arrested at Al Husayniyah district in Baghdad for receiving a bribe from a detainee.
According to Baghdad Today, the officer was apprehended while taking a $1,000 bribe from a prisoner in return for releasing him.
He was referred to the bodies concerned for interrogation.
Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.
The surge in violence between armed groups and government forces has resulted in over 3 million internally displaced persons across Iraq and left more than 11 million in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
Iraq declared the collapse of Islamic State’s territorial influence in Iraq earlier this month with the recapture of Rawa, a city on Anbar’s western borders with Syria, which was the group’s last bastion in Iraq.
