Diyala ( – Iraqi military intelligence forces on Sunday killed an Islamic State militant and destroyed a number of terrorist hotbeds in the eastern province of Diyala.

“Acting upon accurate intelligence reports, a security operation was launched to destroy Islamic State terrorist hotbeds in Abu Sayda district in Diyala,” Alghad Press quoted the Iraqi military intelligence directorate as saying in a press statement.

The Iraqi troops killed an Islamic State militant and destroyed several terrorist hotbeds following fierce clashes with the militant group, the statement read.

A large cache of military equipment, bombs and explosive belts were found inside the hideouts, added the statement.

Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 with the help of a US-led alliance, having retaken all the territory captured by the extremists in 2014 and 2015.

Despite their defeat, Islamic State militants continue to launch sporadic attacks across Iraq against troops. Security reports indicate that the militant group still poses a threat against stability in the country.
