Anbar (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi security forces foiled on Monday a plot by Islamic State militants to sneak into Ramadi city in Anbar, a security source said as the country steps up efforts to eliminate the dormant cells of the terrorist group.

“Security forces received intelligence data on the presence of IS militants besieged in the desert areas, west of Anbar, who seek to infiltrate into some liberated areas in Ramadi,” the source told Almaalomah news website.

“The security forces immediately launched a campaign to chase IS militants and arrested many of them in al-Taamim and Ramadi districts,” the source said.

In December 2017, former Iraqi prime minister Haidar al-Abadi announced full liberation of Iraqi lands, declaring the end of war against IS members.

Iraqi troops retook all the territory captured by the extremists in 2014 and 2015.
