(IraqiNews.com) Erbil – A security source in Erbil Province announced on Friday that 3 people were killed and 6 others injured in a suicide bombing targeting the US consulate located in the northern province’s Ankawa district which is a predominantly Christian neighborhood packed with cafes popular with foreigners.

ISIS has claimed credit for the attack.

The source said in an interview for IraqiNews.com, “a car bomber tried to blow himself up at the US consulate gate in Ain Kawa area north of Erbil, but the consular protection of Zervani forces confronted him and forced him to blow up his car before reaching the target, killing three people and wounding six others, including civilians and security elements.”

The source, who asked anonymously, added: “The security force cordoned off the scene of the blast and prevented approaching it, while the injured were taken to a nearby hospital and the bodies of the dead to the forensic medicine department.”

Erbil province of Kurdistan Region generally enjoys greater stability and security then other provinces of Iraq.
