Mosul (IraqiNews.com) A journalist was killed on Monday, three others were wounded as an IED exploded while they were covering the battles in Mosul’s Old City.

“The Journalist Bakhtiyar al-Haddad, who works for French media institutions, was killed as a bomb exploded while covers the battles ongoing to liberate the Old City,” a security source told Mawazin News.

“Three other French journalists were wounded as result of the blast,” the source, who preferred anonymity, added.

More than 1200 Islamic State militants, including snipers and leaders, were have been killed since launch of offensives in western Mosul, Federal Police previously announced.

In January, the eastern side of Mosul was retaken after three months of battles. Another offensive was launched in February to retake the western side of the city.

Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State Sunni extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

According to a monthly count released by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq, violence and armed conflicts left 824 Iraqis dead and wounded during the month of May.

Nineveh came on top of the most affected governorates with 354 Iraqi civilians were killed and another 470 injured. Baghdad came in second place with 86 victims and 22 injured. Anbar came third with a total of 136 casualties (47 killed and 89 injured).
