Kurdistan Region requests military and humanitarian aid from the European Union

the President of the Presidium of the Kurdistan region, Fouad HusseinErbil (IraqiNews.com) The presidency of the Kurdistan region issued on Friday an official invitation to EU member states to provide military and humanitarian aid to the region, indicating that the goal is to confront the militants of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant as well as restore security to the citizens of Kurdistan and other regions.

The Kurdistan Regional Government’s Chief of Staff, Fouad Hussein said, in a statement received by IraqiNews.com, that “under the guidance of the President of the Kurdistan Region, Massoud Barzani, we have sent a message to the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the European Union which will be held today in Brussels,” noting “The message includes an invitation to the European Union countries to provide military assistance to the region to confront the militants of ISIL and restore security to the citizens of the Kurdistan region and other regions.” Hussein added that “the message also includes an invitation of those countries to provide humanitarian assistance to the displaced Christians, Yazidis and Shabak,” pointing out that “the displaced are facing difficult situations; they need humanitarian aid. A number of European countries announced providing military aid to the Kurdistan region after the withdrawal of the Peshmerga forces from some areas in the province of Nineveh, after the progress of militants of ISIL and its control on those areas
