Mosul (IraqiNews.com) A family of eight members were killed in an airstrike that bombed their house at al-Refaei district, west of Mosul, according to eyewitnesses.

Family of Nezar al-Hallaq, which is famous in the district, was there at the house when the airstrike was launched, the witnesses told Anadolu News Agency on Wednesday. The house was completely destroyed while the family was killed immediately.

In related news, a civilian was killed, while three others were injured as a mortar missile was shot by Iraqi troops against their house in al-Shefaa district, west of Mosul, which is the Islamic State’s largest stronghold in Iraq

Iraqi army forces and the allied U.S.-led coalition were slammed due to the fall of hundreds of civilian casualties by air strikes and explosions since operations launched in October to retake Mosul.

According to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), violence in the country left 1115 casualties, excluding security members, during March.

Eastern Mosul was recaptured from IS in January, after a US-backed offensive was launched in October. A new offensive started in February to retake the west.

Battles in the west are believed to be much more difficult due to the density of residential areas and the high number of civilians who the commanders believe are used as human shields by IS members.
