Diyala (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi troops have killed Islamic State members, northeast of Baquba in Diyala province, a security source said on Sunday.

“Troops, backed by al-Hashd al-Shaabi [Popular Mobilization Forces] managed, today, to kill two Islamic State members and burn a rest house, near al-Mekheisa region, northeast of Baquba,” the source told Almaalomah website.

Security troops and PMFs, according to the source, “resume purging the regions, where the militants exist.”

On Friday, Two soldiers were wounded in an armed attack against a security checkpoint at the outskirts of Hawi al-Udhaim region, north of Diyala. Four Islamic State members were arrested,on Monday, in a joint operation by troops, backed by the army jets, to purge the regions between Tuz Khurmatu, Kefri, Qurret Tabah and Baghdad-Kirkuk road, north of Diyala.

Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks across Iraq against troops. Security reports indicate that the militant group still poses threat against stability in the country.

Thousands of Islamic State militants as well as Iraqi civilians were killed since the government campaign, backed by paramilitary troops and the coalition was launched in October 2016 to fight the militant group, which declared a self-styled “caliphate” from Mosul in June, 2014.

The group, according to observers, still has dormant cells, through which it carries out attacks, across Iraq like it used to do before 2014.
