Diyala (Iraqinews.com) – A terrorist was arrested Sunday in Baqubah city with four grenades in his possession, a Diyala-based intelligence directorate said.

In a statement released by Alghad Press, the Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism Directorate in Diyala said, “Security forces apprehended a terrorist who was wanted on terror charges pursuant to article no. 4 of the Anti-Terrorism Law at al-Katoun area west of Baqubah.”

“The terrorist was nabbed with four grenades and several detonators in his possession,” the statement read, adding that all legal procedures were taken against the arrestee.

Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

The surge in violence between armed groups and government forces has resulted in over 3 million internally displaced persons across Iraq and left more than 11 million in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Thousands of Islamic State militants as well as Iraqi civilians were killed since a government campaign, backed by paramilitary troops and a U.S.-led international coalition, was launched in October 2016 to fight the militant group. Nearly five million people were displaced since the launch of the offensives to recapture occupied cities.

In December, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced full liberation of Iraqi lands, declaring end of war against IS members.
