Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Three children were seriously injured in a booby-trapped house explosion in Mosul city, a security source told Al-Ghad Press.

“The three children were wounded after a booby-trapped house exploded at Badush village west of Mosul,” the source said on Wednesday, adding that one of the children has lost his leg in the attack.

“The three children are in critical condition and still under medical observation,” he added.

Mosul has always been an easy target for Islamic State militants, who seek to take revenge from Iraqi security forces after they lost the city earlier this year.

On July 10, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory over IS militants who had held the second largest Iraqi city of Mosul since 2014. More than 25000 militants were killed throughout the campaign, which started in October 2016.

Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State Sunni extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

About 114 Iraqi civilians were killed, while 244 others were wounded as a result of terrorism, violence and armed conflicts, according to a monthly release by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

Iraq declared the recapture of all areas held by IS earlier this month.
