Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Three Iraqi policemen were wounded Friday when a bomb blast targeted their patrol in southern Baghdad, police sources were quoted saying.

The patrol was passing through Arab Jabbour, a district south of the capital, when the explosive device went off, wounding the three officers.

Violence and armed conflicts claimed the lives of 317 Iraqis and caused injuries to 403 others during the month of April, according to a monthly count released by the United Nations Assistance Mission (UNAMI). The organization had ceased to give tallies of security deaths upon a request from the Iraqi security command which wanted information in that respect to be taken from it.

According to (UNAMI), Nineveh, where U.S.-backed Iraqi government troops are caught up in battles against Islamic State militants in Mosul since October, was the most affected governorate, with 276 casualties (153 killed, 123 injured). Baghdad governorate followed with 55 killed and 179 injured. Salahuddin came third, with 15 killed and 43 injured.

While several blasts in Baghdad are not usually followed by a claim of responsibility, Islamic State militants said they had been behind some bloody explosions and attacks that hit the capital in the past months, leaving casualties among civilians and security troops.

Observers believe IS has tended to escalate attacks against security and civilians outside Mosul in order to reduce security pressure and make up for consecutive losses there.
