Diyala (IraqiNews.com) Two security officers were killed Tuesday when a bomb blast targeted their patrol in northeastern Diyala, a security official said in statements.

Alsumaria News quoted Sadeq al-Husseini, chairman of the security committee in Diyala council saying that two officers from the Dijlah Operations force, including an air force adviser, were killed, while a third was wounded when an explosive device planted on the side of a road near Hamreen Mountains.

The attack comes after two security memebrs were killed and 14 others were wounded in an attack by the Islamic State that targeted the biggest military base in Diyala’s Qaraqosh.

Islamic State militants have escalated attacks against government, paramilitary troops and civilians in Diyala and neighboring Salahuddin over the past few months.

It is widely expected that the Iraqi government will launch a major security offensive targeting IS havens at Iraqi provinces, including Diyala, once it is done with its U.S.-backed campaign to drive out IS from Mosul, the group’s principal stronghold in Iraq, which has been running since October 2016.

Violence and armed conflicts claimed the lives of 317 Iraqis and caused injuries to 403 others during the month of April, according to a monthly United Nations count.

According to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), Nineveh, where U.S.-backed Iraqi government troops are caught up in battles against Islamic State militants in Mosul since October, was the most affected governorate, with 276 casualties (153 killed, 123 injured). Baghdad Governorate followed with 55 killed and 179 injured. Salahuddin came third, with 15 killed and 43 injured.
