Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – UN Special Representative for Iraq Ján Kubiš strongly condemned the cowardly bombings which targeted several residential areas of Baghdad and in Sadr City Sunday, leaving a number of civilians dead and wounded.

“The Special Representative extends his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes the injured a speedy recovery,” a statement by the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) said on Monday.

Kubiš further urged the Iraqi authorities to be extra vigilant to uncover the culprits and thwart further attacks.

“These heinous acts aim to break the spirit of the Iraqis, in particular Baghdadis who have started to enjoy the fruits of peace, and derail their country’s steady progress towards stability, but the unity of the people and the decisive efforts of the security forces are certain to foil the terrorists’ evil designs,” he added.

Yesterday, two bomb blasts rocked Sadr city, east of Baghdad, leaving three people killed and nine others injured.

A security source also said that three people were killed and injured in a bomb blast in al-Sho’la region, northwest of Baghdad.

Violence left 174 Iraqis dead and wounded throughout the month of October, according to a monthly toll released by UNAMI.
