Mosul (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi military intelligence forces arrested on Sunday an Islamic State terrorist at a camp of the displaced people in Mosul city.

“Acting on intelligence reports, troops of the Military Intelligence Directorate arrested an Islamic State terrorist hiding among the displaced families at Al Salamiyah camp in the eastern side of Mosul,” Iraqi news website Almaalomah quoted the directorate as saying in a press statement.

“The terrorist was collecting information about the security forces and their families,” added the statement.

The camp was funded by the Iraqi government’s Ministry of Migration and Displacement (MOMD) and handed over to UNHCR and its partners, ISHO, ACTED and Samaritan’s Purse, for upgrading work, including fencing, installation of electricity and the improvement of water and sanitation facilities.

Former Iraqi prime minister Haider al-Abadi announced in July 2017 liberation of the second largest Iraqi city of Mosul from IS militants, who had captured it in 2014. More than 25,000 militants were killed throughout the campaign, which started in October 2016.

The campaign was backed by paramilitary troops and a U.S.-led international coalition.

Iraq declared the collapse of Islamic State’s territorial influence in Iraq in November 2017 with the recapture of Rawa, a city on Anbar’s western borders with Syria, which was the group’s last bastion in Iraq.
