Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Nechirvan Barzani, thanked the United States for the support it provides to the region during its war against terrorism.

The U.S. Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, arrived in the capital of the Kurdistan region, Erbil, on Tuesday, coming from the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

“We agreed on the importance of supporting the Iraqi government and working together in the region to maintain stability. We emphasized that the Kurdistan region will remain a factor of calm and stability,” Barzani said during a joint press conference with Austin.

“We talked about the importance of supporting the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi forces in confronting ISIS, as well as the support of the United States and friendly countries for the reform program and the Ministry of Peshmerga,” Barzani stated.

“We expressed that we are determined to complete the reform program of the Peshmerga forces, and we will also continue to make efforts to solve the internal issues of the Kurdistan region,” Barzani explained.

“We thank you for your role in helping the Peshmerga, and we thank the United States for its continuous support for Iraq and the Kurdistan region,” Barzani addressed the U.S. Secretary of Defense.

Barzani stressed that resolving the differences and the outstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad contributes to achieving security, political and economic stability in the country.
