Earthquake hits Sulaymaniyah, Kirkuk

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – A security source said that an earthquake struck on Thursday the governorates of Sulaymaniyah and Kirkuk in northern Iraq, Alsumaria News reported.
The security source mentioned that citizens felt the earthquake in the governorates of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah in northern Iraq.
The source added that the authorities did not issue any statement regarding the strength of the earthquake and whether it caused any losses or not.
Seismic monitoring stations indicated that the intensity of the earthquake was five degrees on the Richter scale, it struck the Iraqi-Iranian borders, and was felt by people in Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
The Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported that an earthquake measuring 4.8 degrees on the Richter scale hit Sulaymaniyah, according to official sources.
It is not known yet if the earthquake caused any human or material losses, INA added.
On February 25, the Iraqi government announced that two earthquakes were recorded in the governorates of Nineveh and Erbil, with no casualties or material losses reported.
On February 22, a statement issued by the Iraqi Meteorological Organization and Seismology mentioned that an earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale hit Nineveh governorate in northern Iraq.
These earthquakes follow a devastating earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale that struck southern Turkey and northern Syria on February 6. The aftershocks of this earthquake reached other countries in the region, and were felt by residents in Lebanon and Iraq.
