Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraq will choose an international operator for its Al-Faw Port in the first quarter of 2024 following the submission of proposals by a number of foreign businesses.

According to Maytham Al-Safi, a spokesperson for the Iraqi Transport Ministry, the Ministry has strict requirements for bids in order to guarantee the smooth functioning of one of the biggest container terminals in the world.

“A number of foreign businesses are vying for this deal…We have made the decision to select the winning bidder within the first quarter of this year,” Safi stated in a statement.

The $2.7 billion port in south Iraq, which would link the East and West with international container traffic, is expected to be finished by the end of 2027, according to the Transport Ministry.
