Iraq launches projects to boost efficiency of gas-powered energy generation units

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The first phase of initiatives aiming at increasing the effectiveness of gas units in the electrical sector was launched by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Sudani and Iraqi Minister of Electricity Ziyad Ali Fadel.

Eight power plants in the first phase required operation of 40 cooling units. Several gas power plants in Karbala, Basra, Najaf, Kirkuk, Diwaniyah, and Al-Sadr in Baghdad, as well as Al-Qayyara in Nineveh, were included in the initial phase of development projects.

In order to compensate for the loss of 797 megawatts of power producing capacity, the new cooling systems will assist in reducing electrical energy losses throughout the hot summer months in Iraq.

Siemens and the General Company for Electric Power Production carried out the projects in Iraq.

According to Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity, These stations’ cooling systems were installed and run, adding 364 megawatts of extra electricity to the national electrical grid. The second phase, which comprises 32 systems in seven more power plants, will shortly be finished.
