Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Minister of Health, Saleh Al-Hasnawi, announced on Sunday that Baghdad will host an international conference on cancer next October, indicating that progress has been made in combating the disease, according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

Al-Hasnawi told INA that a meeting with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) addressed all measures taken by the Iraqi government regarding the disease, including a special program for cancer with a financing cost of 200 billion dinars (approximately $153.3 million).

“The ministry worked during the last period to update the radiotherapy equipment. The process has been completed in some governorates, and work is underway to complete the modernization of the rest of the equipment in all governorates,” Al-Hasnawi clarified.

The Iraqi official elaborated that an international scientific conference will be held next October in Baghdad with the participation of experts from United Nations organizations concerned with atomic energy and cancer treatments.

Al-Hasnawi indicated that the conference, which will be held under the auspices of the Iraqi Prime Minister, will review the national plan of Iraq to provide treatment for Iraqis suffering from cancer.
